Location Description

Gisborne City is situated on the East Coast and is known for its warm weather. It has an annual average of around 2200 sunshine hours, with about 65 days rising over 24°C. Annual rainfall is about 1000mm. This gives rise to a regional wine, fruit-growing and farming industry. Gisborne is renowned for its coastal recreational activities, such as surfing and fishing, and is also an important location in Maori and European history. Residents proudly affirm the city as the first place in the world to see the sun.

Attractions

Captain James Cook first set foot in New Zealand on 9 October, 1769, at what is now the Cook Landing Site National Historic Reserve at Kaiti Beach.

Gisborne Harbour was created from a division of the Turanganui River. Its inner harbour is a marina with cafes and restaurants and its outer harbour is used for industry.

Te Poho-o-Rawiri is one of the largest carved Maori meeting houses in New Zealand.

Star of Canada Maritime Museum, next to the Taruheru River, is the wheelhouse saved from the 'SS Star of Canada', shipwrecked in the region in 1912.

The East Coast Museum of Technology holds a large collection of historical machinery, equipment, engines and so forth.

The Botanical Gardens cover a four-hectare area on the Taruheru River, near the city centre.

The sun is said to shine its first rays each day on the Millennium Wall, on Waikanae Beach.

The flea market is held on Saturday mornings at Alfred Cox Park, Grey Street.
