Location Description

Huntly is 30 minutes' drive north of Hamilton. The township is divided in the middle by the Waikato River. The area is known for its farming and historical coal-mining industry. Open cast mines are found 6 kilometres from the town and underground mines some distance away. The coal is used at the nearby Huntly Power Station, which generates electricity for the region. Huntly's Domain borders Lake Hakanoa and is the main outdoor recreation area, with its sports facilities and boating club. The town has two shopping centres and a full range of community services.
