Location Description

Waimate has a population of just under 3,000 in the town itself, and is the centre of the South. It is ideally located halfway between Christchurch and Dunedin and Queenstown. A popular tourist route from Christchurch to Queenstown, Waimate offers an ideal stopover for travellers to enjoy the peacefulness and serenity of rural New Zealand.

The charming town has the majority of original buildings of mainly Edwardian Style lining the wide main street. Visitors enjoy a variet of native bush walks located close to the town. The most popular walk, the Waimate walkway to the whitehorse monument.

Mountain biking has proven extremely popular folowing the release of a brochure promoting 5 trails around Waihaorunga / Hakataramea area.

The outdoors person is catered for with a range of activities from fishing, boating, yachting, bird watching and hunting. The mighty Waitaki river draws fishing enthusiasts from all over the world to the annual salmon fishing contest.

Golf lovers are well catered for with a range of high class courses within an hour and half away. A unique draw card to Waimate is the red necked or brush wallaby that live in prolific numbers in the Hunter hills.

Waimate also offers an extensive choice of elite gardens, craft shops and art galleries along with a knitwear factory where reasonably priced knitwear may be purchased.
