Situated 18 kilometres north of Timaru on State Highway 1, Temuka is a picturesque town with an energetic community that takes great pride in its heritage - a heritage that saw local farmer Richard Pearse rival the Wright Brothers as the first man to fly (some world aviation authorities still say he was, and try telling a local he wasn’t!).
Although the town is renowned for its 'Temuka Pottery', Temuka’s economy is based mainly on agriculture and associated industries. The giant Fonterra dairy factory at Clandeboye is the area’s largest employer and stock sales are held in Temuka each Monday. A strong rural community is still very established and recognisable here.
Locals enjoy the friendly, easy-going lifestyle Temuka brings. Families, retired couples and those starting out are taking the opportunity to settle in Temuka for the host of attractions within easy reach, from one of New Zealand’s best and prettiest golf courses to some of the finest trout and salmon fishing in the world and of course the ever popular whitebaiting at the local river mouths. Anglers from all over the world have long been drawn to Temuka by its reputation for fine fishing rivers, especially where the Rangitata and Opihi meet the vast Pacific Ocean.
Although close to Timaru, Temuka is self-sufficient, with a full range of medical facilities and dozens of community service organisations. The community also supports over 30 hobby groups and over 30 sporting and recreational groups. Great medical facilities, schools and churches all add to the appeal.
Visitors and new arrivals are invariably impressed by the warm, out-going friendliness of the local people, a special trait for which Temuka is renowned. They are fiercely proud of their town, and proud that so many people should want to visit.
