Location Description

Tauranga city is located on the coast in the Bay of Plenty. It is built around a harbour, at whose entrance is the 232-metre Mt Maunganui. Along its northern edge is a 35-kilometre beach. Tauranga is one of the sunniest places in New Zealand. Its rainfall is limited to a few days per year, but is usually very heavy. Tauranga is experiencing considerable population growth, its rate being 3.3 percent, the fourth highest in New Zealand. The Port of Tauranga is a major exporting facility.

Attractions

  • Beaches and foreshore reserve coastline, stretching for 50km, are maintained by the Tauranga District Council. The district has many walkways in the coastal areas and inland reserves.

  • McLaren Falls Park, just outside Tauranga, is a 170-hectare area with an excellent collection of trees. It offers recreational activities such as fishing and camping, and has hostels, an animal park and an equestrian area.

  • The Matua Saltmarsh is a 20-hectare coastal wetland in the Tauranga District. It is home to the threatened North Island fernbird and banded rail.

  • The Elms Mission House is one of Tauranga's historic places. The first building completed at the mission was the library in 1838, to which a chimney was added in 1842 to preserve the books from the damp. The mission house was completed in 1847.

  • The Mission Cemetery was originally the Otamataha Pa site. The cemetery contains the remains of many who died in the land wars of 1864-1865.

  • Monmouth Redoubt, originally the Taumatakahawai Pa, became a fortified position for the Europeans during the land wars.

  • The Mid-City Mall markets and Red Square Crafts are held on the second Friday of each month. The City Produce Market, located in the car park on the corner of Willow and Hamilton Streets, is held every Sunday.
