Kerikeri is in the Bay of Islands, the site of important historical events for New Zealand. Kerikeri was the second mission station in the country and its historic places are still standing. The town is located in a large fruit-growing area, with citrus orchards lining the roads that lead into its modern shopping centre. Being semi-rural and coastal, the town has facilities for sports such as golf and yachting. The community has many sports, arts and community-oriented associations. The Stone Store was built in 1836 and is the oldest stone building in New Zealand. The Mission House and the Stone Store together comprise the Kerikeri Mission Station (1819-1848), the second mission station in the country.
