Location Description

Rotorua is an important tourist destination. It is located next door to Lake Rotorua, one of 14 lakes in the district. The district is renowned for its four thermal sites, with their geysers, hot springs and boiling mud pools, and for the sulphur smell that they emit.

Rotorua offers a very wide range of adventure and sporting activities. It is rich in Maori culture, with 35 maraes in the district, and has all the facilities of a modern city.

Attractions

  • Lake Rotorua is the largest lake in the Rotorua district. It is a few minutes' walk from the city centre. Rotorua District has 14 lakes, including Lake Rotorua.

  • Four major thermal areas are located in the Rotorua area: Whakarewarewa, Waimangu, Waiotapu and Hell's Gate. These sites feature geysers, boiling mud pools, hot springs, pools, falls and steaming craters. They are within 30 minutes' drive of Rotorua city.

  • The Buried Village is the remains of a village that was submerged with ash when Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886. The disaster took 153 lives.

  • Ohinemutu Village and Tamaki Village are two Maori villages in the Rotorua area. They may be visited by tourists.
